ABOUT THE PROJECT.
The Front of House's answer to the chef's stage.
The Switch is a chance for waiters, managers, bartenders and sommeliers to learn from their peers, experience different environments and be exposed to new ways of working. This is knowledge they can build on, and take to back to their own restaurants. The experience can also develop new relationships across the industry, which will hopefully last them throughout their careers.
Spearheaded by Emma Underwood (GM, STEM) and Anna Sulan Masing, The Switch launched in October 2016.
The Switch 2018 will start on 15 October, and applications are now open. Details here.
The initiative pairs restaurants with different environments, e.g. size, location, style, environment. A FoH staff member will ‘switch’ environments for three or five days, and will be paired with a 'buddy', to show them the ropes. The buddy system will also mean than exchange of knowledge is not just for those that leave thier environment.
All those taking parts in The Switch will be encouraged to keep record of their experience that week, writing blogs and across the various social media platforms using the hashtag #FoHswtich.
As well as a great learning experience, one of our aims is to shine a light on to the wonderful world of Front of House, create positive narratives and examples of this career being an exciting and viable career choice.
We couldn't do this without sponsorship. Our sponsors cover train fares, and accomodation for Switches.
